Poor Decision Making in The Cake Tin

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

With 71 minutes on the clock in the Cake Tin in Wellington, Scotland 3 metres from the Puma’s line ref Wayne Barnes puts his arm out to signal penalty advantage to the Scots.

At that moment the decision making by Mike Blair and Dan Parkes cost a home nation (probably Scotland) a knock out place in the world cup.

Scotland were in possession and going forward had they not have scored the try then Wayne Barnes would have brought them back for the penalty. If the Scots’ half backs had have been positive then one of two things would have happened.

  1. Scotland would have scored a try taking them either 8 points or 10 points clear after the conversion there would have been only 6 or 7 minutes left to play meaning Scotland would probably have won.

  1. Scotland would have gone through phases and not scored, Wayne Barnes would have brought Scotland back for the easy penalty. The Scots would have had more time to compose themselves for the next kick off & may well have not conceded the try.

This is a common fault in rugby, any young half backs out there if 5 metres out close to the posts be positive, if you don’t score a try you will still get the chance of three points.

Sure Scotland can try to blame Wayne Barnes, he should have give penalty against Contepomi in the last play & his management of the contact area was debatable.

But as coaches and players we are not able to control the referee but we can control our own decision making. If you ask Blair or Parkes now they will say they got it wrong.

Now barring a Georgian miracle either Scotland or England are going home. Scotland need to win the clash with England; scoring 4 tries in the process and stopping England getting the losing bonus point.

All eyes now on Eden Park Auckland will it be Argentina, England or Scotland on the plane home. Anything is possible but it looks like the Scots exiting at the group stages for the first time.

I for one hope not, for the sake of home nations rugby I will be hoping for a Georgian win next Sunday in Palmerston North.

Underdog tags seems to sit well with the Irish!

Friday, September 16th, 2011

As we all know the main problem with Ireland in the last 5 games has quite simply been that they haven’t put any sort of an performance together, we’ve been looking but inexplicably it just hasn’t arrived!

So as nothing has seemed to get these guys motivated in recent times, maybe this game against the Aussies couldn’t come at a better time?

Historically, particularly in the amateur era, Ireland always had the chance of pulling out of the bag a one off performance against the better sides, every now and again getting the result when you catch your opponents on a bad day, seeming to revel in the total underdog tag.

Now having two of the most dominant club sides in Europe, winning several triple crowns and a grand slam in the last couple of years you would think that those days are well gone and that Ireland would be genuine contenders every time but recently for some reason this just isn’t so.

No matter how good we ever got it has always been an achilles heel of the Irish when playing a team whom you should beat easily, instead of doing so we go down to their level and compete there struggling to get the result, instead of putting them to the sword! It was like we couldn’t perform properly without this underdog tag!

But despite the fact that this seems to be back, there is one difference…we are a much much better team than we were back then!

On Saturday if the Australians play as well as they can and Ireland does likewise, Ireland could still win! This is the difference between now and then.

As for this year’s WRC this is do or die for Ireland, not that they have to win to get through but it still that search for the performance that indicates that they can play well enough to win the rest of the games and get out of the pool.

I honestly expect a very good game on Saturday and although I hope for a win it is impossible to predict, the odds would be against it…just the way we like it!!

England’s Inauspicious Start

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

England’s inauspicious start

I think most pundits and fans are slightly underwhelmed by England’s opening salvo against Argentina.

Now, no-one should ever underestimate the South Americans- they’re big, beefy and brawny, but if England are to develop to where they claim they are aspiring to be, their performances need to improve dramatically.

England struggled to gather momentum. They failed to get the quick ball they need to play their gameplan and Lobbe and his cohorts in the Argentinean backrow gave us a torrid time at the breakdown, although James Haskell continued his improvement.

One of the big plusses from the Ireland game was the hunger to win that quick ball, and I didn’t feel that was evident in the same way. We are dependent on this area of the game, and without it, we look slow, sluggish and ponderous.

The other Irish plus, my fellow Tiger Manu Tuilagi, suffered by trying to take too much ball from first phase into a well-drilled drift defence. Manu, with pace and power to burn, will skin many players one on one in open and broken play, but trying to bosh it up in a first or second phase situation is not playing to his strengths. It shows we still need to work out that midfield strategy, although I’m more comfortable with the current combination that those that have gone before.

The other talking point was Jonny Wilkinson’s kicking. In a way, I’m glad he struggled (reports are that kickers are complaining that the new Gilbert ball is slightly different in shape and weight) as it meant he had to play the corners and win with tries. Benny Young’s moment of brilliance showed just what he brings to the side as an attacking threat and again, that was great to see, as was the way we dominated a traditionally tough scrummaging pack.

Now, I’m not naïve enough to think the Argentineans would be a pushover, but equally I expected more. We won, and in the old adage, we won ugly, which bodes well, and sometimes it’s good to get a performance like this out in the open so the gameplan can be fine-tuned. If we win the next 6 games by a similar margin there will be no complaints, but, being pragmatic, unless we sort out that midfield optioning, the dynamic ball at rucktime and our place kicking, the big boys of the 3 Nations are not going to be awake at night worrying about the attacking threat England pose.

Time will tell.

Big Guns Misfire?

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Well the first weekend of matches are over and the orld Cup got off to what I think was a predictable start. None of the teams that I think have the biggest chance of makingit to the final really fired. The All Blacks never really got out of second gear, England ground out a tough win, and a somewhat overconfident South Africa nearly lost it against Wales.

The bottom line is the big guns won, and in tournament rugby that is all that matters. It’s not about who starts the tournament well, it’s more about who gets to the final and does it on that day. With that in my mind I think the toughness shown by England both mental and physical mark them out in the first games. The sheer desire to get the job done was what was most apparent to me. yes the performance was not the best, but Argentina are no pushovers. The point is that if the team improve my twenty percent over the tournament and show the same mental fortitude they will be difficult to beat.

As for the All Blacks they really need to be tested before you can judge if they are the real deal. As for South Africa they played the get out of jail card and in my view did not deserve the win against Wales. There seemed to be a “leave it to someone else” attitude amongst the team. Against better teams than Wales that will not be good enough.

But what about Wales/ They certainly turned up to play and with a dynamic back row and outside backs who can punch big holes in midfield they look to have hit on a formula that could take them further in the competition. That said they will need to improve in other areas. The try that settled the game was shocking to concede at this level.

Anyway lets look forward to the next round of games.

Here we go!!

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Yes the RWC is already well underway and there have already been some very interesting games with no real shocks but with some narrow escapes!!

Ireland get their campaign underway on Sunday morning against our own Eddie O ‘Sullivan’s USA Eagles, if anybody will know how to through a spanner into Irelands plans it will be Eddie!

I think the result is probably not in doubt but with Ireland poor showing in the warm-up games they really need a very good performance in this game. But with the much publicised 9/11 anniversary it will add spice to the Americans cause and they will not back down.

There has been criticism thrown at Declan about the fact that he still, even after more warm up games than pretty any other major rugby playing nation, he still has to start players that just plain and simply need game time! What people wanted was the full starting team to play together to lead well into the Aussie game next week.

But to me it’s not only about the Aussie game, yes if they do win that game and finish top of the group, the path through the knockout stages is totally different to coming 2nd in the group. But to me there is still a banana skin around the corner…the Italians!

They have stated that the Irish game is the one they are targeting, so much so that they are not even fielding a full side against the Australians! If they lose that game and win against Russia, USA, very doable and they then play Ireland in the last game of the group. This could be a cracking game as they both could have lost one game and won the rest, remember we didn’t exactly win well against them in the Six Nations!

So here to a very good performance and roll onto the Aussies!!

Semi Final Spot Beckons

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Its prediction time for the Rugby World Cup. I am going to stick my neck on the line and  predict Ireland to reach the semi final stage. Some people may not agree with me after 4 defeats out of 4 in the warm up games, but that’s exactly what they where warm up games to get the boys ready for the real business which starts this weekend against the USA. I think Declan’s (Kidney) masterstroke of taking the team to the party capital of New Zealand Queenstown upon arrival, has really benefited the team. Photos of the Irish boys enjoying themselves flying down the side of mountains in a luge, taking a spin on jet boats on the shot over river, some lads experiencing bungee jumps has all added to the team spirit and cleared the decks for the start of the competition proper. No on will remember the England warm up game at the Aviva or the two defeats against the French if Ireland can be the first Irish team to reach a semi final of a major world tournament.

Another big reason I think this present Irish team will turn things around at the World Cup is that a lot of the squad realise it will be their last chance at success in this competition. Players like Paul O’Connell, Ronan O’Gara, Brian O’Driscoll, Donnacha O’Callaghan, Denis Leamy, Jerry Flannery, Rory Best, Geordan Murphy, Gordon Darcy probably will not be at the next World Cup. That is a hell of a lot of world class players all putting in one more huge effort and this collective push I feel will be the catalyst for the team to really galvanise in time to hit their straps when it matters most.

So Ireland to make at least the semis  other predictions

To come out of pool A  – New Zealand and France

To come out of pool B  – England and Scotland

To come out of pool C  – Australia and Ireland

To come out of pool D  – Wales and South Africa

Quarter Finals

New Zealand to beat Scotland

England to beat France

Australia to beat South Africa

Ireland to beat Wales

Semis ????????????????????

The Talking Stops!

Monday, August 29th, 2011

The warm up games are over, the squads finalised, bags are packed and it’s time to get on the plane to New Zealand. All the talk and hype now mean nothing it’s down to performances on the pitch.

Realistically, what can we expect from the four teams from the British Isles?

Looking at Ireland first I think they look in poor shape, four losses in the warm ups is probably not what they expected, nor wanted. That said the expectations may well have been reduced and that will take some pressure off the tour party. They do need to get off to a good start. If they do that then the quarter finals should be no problem. I can’t however see them going beyond that stage.

For Scotland the last twelve months have seen a steady improvement and while I would expect them to make the last eight as well I believe that would be a good result with the meager resources available to Andy Robinson.

What about Wales? Well victory over England may well have seen expectation increase in the principality, but I’m not sure that it will mean anything in New Zealand. I think Wales have some very good players, but that in itself does not guarantee results. I’m really unsure about what will happen to Wales in this World Cup. Surprise package who make the semis, or out at the group stages?

Finally England, well semi-finals is a minimum requirement for the talent available. They could go all the way and win the Webb Ellis Cup. Like all four of the teams from the British Isles much will depend on how they fair with injuries and any other uncontrolable adversity that might befall them. I’ll stick my neck out though and tip them to win it, and I’ll also predict the All Blacks don’t make the final!!!

Concern But Not Panic

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Irelands 20-9 defeat to England on Saturday was their 4th loss out of 4 rugby world cup warm up games. Although it was not the ideal scenario for Ireland going into the world cup I don’t think it is the time just yet to hit the panic button. What will be a major cause of concern is the injury profile, unfortunately David Wallace suffered a heartbreaking injury to his knee which rules him out of any participation in the tournament. Cian Healy picked up a nasty eye socket injury which will delay his departure down to New Zealand and it is reported that flanker Sean O’Brien is in serious doubt for some if not all the campaign.

Despite all the bad injury news I still feel Ireland can resurrect their ambitions and still feature prominently in the business end of the competition. Drico (Brian O’Driscoll) is a big stage player  his leadership, experience and will to win ultimately will shine through when the competition starts in earnest.

In one way having such a disjointed warm up campaign will allow Ireland to fly in under the radar a wee bit and catch a few teams on the hop. The expectation levels have certainly lowered around the nation and that suits the Irish psyche.

England in the balance

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Balance

I must say that the England squad announcement was surprising in some respects, but consistent and dare I say predictable in others.

I want to focus on the balance of the side, the centre selection, and the effect Danny Care’s injury has had on the overall balance.

Had Care been fit, I am convinced that Foden would have acted as the 3rd scrum half (Benny Youngs will remain first choice if fit) and neither Simpson nor Wigglesworth would have been selected.

So, in essence, one injury has cost 2 other players the chance of a tour. One man has needed 2 players to replace him.

Now I’m not going to speculate about the perceived ability of Simpson or Wigglesworth as they both have weaknesses but also strengths. However, what I will suggest is that this has complicated the balance of the squad.

When I look at the centre selection, one thing that does worry me is the lack of guile; we miss someone who has the ability to make an x-factor play, and the 4 players selected are matching, rather than contrasting in their styles. It smacks of England’s determination to play a ‘rugby league’ style of attacking game, pick, drive, ruck etc.

However, the delicious paradox here is that in order to play that type of game, a grafting, rucking open side is a pre-requisite. Now England only have one player approaching that role (Moody) and a host of makeshift 6 1/2′s, leaving question marks over the balance of the whole back 5 forwards.

I’m sure England will acquit themselves to the best of their ability, but I see nothing more than ‘doing their best’. I see no-one capable of breaking the defensive line with one moment of genius (other than the raw Tuilagi) and England’s selection smacks of safety first and defensive power over creativity.

Maybe Johnson’s hand has been forced due to the poor form of Flutey and a lack of other alternatives, but I’m disappointed that we got to a world cup with such a lack of attacking variety.

Last chance for a win before the WRC

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Yes all the talk for Declan Kidney before these warm up games started was it was very important to get match time for his squad and lift the performances but nobody I think expected them to be 0-3 in their international series.

And even the above plan couldn’t be stuck to, for a team that played more warm up games than most they still have a team starting this Saturday that contains plenty of players who still badly need time on the pitch, Geordan Murphy, Tommy Bowe, David Wallace, Stephen Ferris have next to no time between them and then you have the ones who have played little, Paul O’Connell, Flannery, Heaslip and then you’ve got the likes of young Conor Murray on the bench who most certainly has to get as much time on the pitch as he can to get some experience at playing at this level!

Makes you wonder what way the teams were put together in the first place?!

During the week the main talking points was the travelling squad that was announced, as with all of these there are some guys who should have made it and some who shouldn’t and the names you fill in there is all depending who you are talking to!

The omission of Luke Fitzgerald and Tomas O’Leary grabbed the main headlines. O’Leary plain and simple just suffered the consequences of a bad game against the French last week, to think about it if he had just played alright and did nothing special but not mess up he would have travelled as no.1, a big fall from grace!

Luke would tell you himself that he’s not quite there form wise yet but he was starting to show it and I would have brought a attacking talent like him along, replacing someone like Paddy Wallace as utility back.

Everyone thought John “The Bull” Hayes was going to travel when we saw how Buckley got done over against the French over there but we should always remember Kidney a conservative man and he had made his mind up on this one a while ago!

This should be a cracking game at the weekend, with more pressure on Ireland to get the result and England will be looking to right the result from the last time they travelled to Dublin, should be a cracker!!
