The Quote

“What’s the worst thing that can happen to a quarterback? He loses his confidence” – Terry Bradshaw (NFL Hall of Fame)

The Lesson

Losing confidence is the worst thing that can happen to any player. When we lose confidence we lose the very foundation to our performance. It’s therefore crucial that we maintain our self belief and faith in ourselves even when things are going badly.

We need to recognise the signs that undermine our confidence and remind ourselves through positive self talk of our past performances that have been special. We should also look to the support of others such as coaches and family to support us and help rebuild our confidence.

The Action

Confidence is my constant companion while I train or play.

The Quote

“It’s great to win, but it’s also great fun to be in the thick of a truly well and hard fought contest against opponents you respect, whatever the outcome” – Jack Nicklaus (US Golfer)

The Lesson

There is no better feeling than performing at our maximum, and strangely enough that often happens when we are in the toughest of contests. The satisfaction that comes with winning these contests is always much greater than against lesser opponents.

When we play in these games we become immersed in every moment and every small aspect becomes a joy, we even applaud our opponents success such is our respect for their ability matched against our own.

The Action

I will look for contests that challenge me, because the fun lies in the challenge not just the winning.

The Quote

“To give yourself the best possible chance of playing to your potential, you must prepare for every eventuality. That means practice – there are no shortcuts. You must lay the proper foundation” – Seve Ballesteros (Spanish Golfer)

The Lesson

Practice, Practice, Practice it’s so monotonous, but there is no way to avoid it. Sometimes we might be tempted to miss a training session and think there wil be no consequence. Deep down though we do realise that there is a purpose all the training and practice. We do realise that without it we cannot possibly achieve our potential. It’s therefore necessary to push on when it is difficult and complete that training session in order to meet our objective of being the best we can be.

The Action

Training, although draining at times is invaluable in my quest to reach my full potential.
